5 REASONS TO JOIN AN INTRAMURAL SPORTS TEAM
Before I have you fully convinced to try something new and out of your comfort zone let me tell you a little backstory on how I found myself participating in something that was causing major traffic in my DM's regarding my sanity and my decision to join a dodgeball team! "DODGEBALL? WHAT?" "THAT IS HILARIOUS YOU ARE ON A DODGEBALL TEAM" What the heck people? Why am I being judged for this, I have been an athlete my whole life...is this really that out of the ordinary? Well the answer is YES. For me at this point in my life YES it was out of the ordinary and out of my COMFORT ZONE 100%. I am an Orangetheory kinda gal I don't think dodgeball is for me. I said "Possibly" "Let me think on it" "sounds fun" "I just might not be the best" "I'm nervous" .
Excuses. Excuses. Excuses. But this is how we initially react to things and situations that are unknown or new to us. When we are routine and used to certain things change or trying something new can be extremely difficult for us. When I was asked to join this dodgeball league I was reading a book called "Judgement Detox". That night I was going to "think on it" I read a chapter regarding how quick we are to place judgments on others and harshly so on ourselves! I was reading exactly what I needed to see in that very moment. I thought to myself why am I placing all these instant judgements on something I literally know nothing about? Well that is just it. I knew nothing about this league, the people I would be playing with, whether or not I would be good or not, whether I would be accepted, and all of those things scared me and discouraged me. I chose to dismiss all judgements and the very next day I was registered and strangely anxious and excited for this entire ordeal. Throw Balls at Guys? I can do that!
Let me end this with two of my favorite quotes:
"The key to change is to let go of fear"
"Breaking out of your comfort zone is the pathway to growth"
IF YOU AREN'T CONVINCED YET... HERE ARE 5 MORE REASONS TO JOIN!!!
1. TO GET FIT
O was I in for a rude awakening showing up thinking I was going to stand there all pretty at Game 1. The game ended and I was drenched in sweat and didn't think I could physically make it to the bar after! I was out of breath (what the heck I thought I was in shape!), and I was confused and embarrassed by how sore I was the next morning when I woke up! Believe me when I say these games are FUN but they are also COMPETITIVE, therefore, you are working up a sweat whether you want to or not. You will be having so much fun all while getting in that 60 minutes of physical activity for the day. Hey even if you lose every game like my team this should still be a WIN WIN in your eyes! Get Fit or Dodge Trying!
2. TO MEET PEOPLE IN AN ORGANIC, SOBER WAY... WELL KIND OF...
Another reason I decided to join this league was because I WAS QUEEN of complaining about having no guy friends, not being able to meet people without it involving being wasted on a weekend, and I was frustrated with attempting to meet new people through apps. BLEH! This was the answer to all my complaints and frustrations. How could I pass this opportunity up? I can't complain about something non-stop and then not be willing to make a change! Right? Okay so it may have taken me a few weeks to catch on to the disguised alcoholic gatorade beverages at the games but no worries that is by no means a requirement! And okay so we all go out afterwards to a team bar and I am not going to lie it gets pretty TURNT UP ON A TUESDAY but again there is no pressure to be a part of the drinking festivities but the option is there! Everyone is in a meeting people mind-set whether they are a little tipsy or not!
3. TO DE-STRESS
What better way to let go of a hard day at work or just your daily life frustrations than to leave the office or clock out and throw balls at people? I mean this became something I looked forward to on Tuesdays and something I missed every other day of the week. Getting out a little aggression during my game then letting loose at the bar afterwards led to some of my best weekday sleep, several 6am cancelled Orangetheory classes, and lots of horrible Britney Spears karaoke. But guess what? Life is all about balance and this routine worked for me. That Wednesday morning soreness started to feel pretty dam good and despite missing my "routine" Wednesday workouts this new routine made me feel ready to tackle the day... aside from those times I closed the bar out. I don't want to talk about those Wednesdays at work... BALANCE BABY.
4. TO BE PART OF A JUDGEMENT-FREE COMMUNITY
Unless you take the time to work on dismissing judgements they are going to hit you hard in the face whether you want them to or not. What matters most is what you decide to do when those judgements take over your mind. Sure I was new to this league, my entire team was new to the league, I hadn't touched a dodgeball since like 3rd grade, and there is no doubt people were looking at me thinking and saying all kinds of things. But mostly everyone took the time to get to know me at the games, the bar, the awesome league parties, and some people were a little more comfortable reaching out to me via social media! I felt very welcomed to the league! I mean WTF I am now going to WAKAPALOOZA in Las Vegas in October! What is WAKAPALOOZA you ask? I am laughing because I truthfully have no idea what I agreed too, yet again, but that is the exciting part!
5. TO OPEN NEW DOORS & MAKE CONNECTIONS
I was warned after Week 1 when I made a joke "Watch I've been single my entire life... I join a dodgeball league and meet my future husband" I was told don't make that joke because people are in relationships from this league, people have gotten married meeting in this league, people have gotten jobs through people in this league... you get the idea. Think about it. Here you are exposing yourself to an entire new league of entirely NEW PEOPLE! I have said over and over OMG I can't imagine had I not done this. There are so many incredible people I have met and truthfully don't feel I would have met any other way. I am not even sure most of these people share any other common interest with me other than this Dodgeball league. Where the heck would I have crossed paths with them? The sad truth is I probably would not have! I have made friends, met people with similar jobs in the industry, and have gotten close with the most unexpected people!
Did I mention this league isn't dodgeball exclusive. There is literally something for everyone! Volleyball, Softball, Kickball, Basketball... Feel free to be part of something you know you are good at OR take on a new, exciting adventure! I personally play for CLUBWAKA but every city has a plethora of leagues to choose from! Some other Los Angeles leagues include: Urban Sports LA, Eagle Rock Yacht Club , GLASA, LA Sports Net , and Zog Sports just to name a few! Also many of these are nationwide!
There is SOMETHING for EVERYONE FIT FRIENDS!
